Mobil SHC™ PM 320 synthetic paper machine oil helps mill improve calendar reliability
Without a lubricant-related bearing issue
15 years
Beloit/Metso calendar lube system
Paper mill
Maine, United States
Situation
A Maine paper mill operates a Beloit/Metso calendar and size press on its PM4 with a 4,500 gallon lube system that circulates oil to eight large spherical roller bearings. Operating at high temperatures and with rigorous production schedules, the company approached ExxonMobil for a lubricant solution to protect this critical equipment during extended operation at high temperatures.
Recommendation
ExxonMobil engineers recommended the company use Mobil SHC™ PM 320 synthetic paper machine circulating oil. The high viscosity index and thermal stability of Mobil SHC PM 320 oil allows it to withstand high temperatures, providing superior lubrication that can extend bearing life. They also recommended the mill perform routine Mobil ServSM Lubricant Analysis to help monitor equipment and oil condition.
Result
After transitioning to Mobil SHC PM 320 circulating oil, the calendar lube oil system on PM4 was able to exceed 15 years of operation without a single lubricant-related bearing issue. In addition, the use of Mobil Serv Lubricant Analysis has helped the mill avoid premature fluid change-out and has extended the life of the system’s lubricant by three years, generating a company-estimated savings of US $34,500.
