Situation

Orient Ceramics operates a Dowty gear pump in its slip hydraulic system. Lubricated with a conventional hydraulic oil, the pumps were required to maintain 2,200 psi (150 bar) operating pressure. Operating under severe conditions, the hydraulic oil reservoir was consistently running above 70°C (158°F), with average pump life of 3,600 hours and oil replacement intervals of 7,200 hours. In an effort to improve productivity, the company approached ExxonMobil for a lubricant strategy capable of extending oil drain intervals and prolonging equipment life.
