Mobil Delvac™ 1 ESP 5W-40 helps improve engine efficiency and reduce emissions by 1.9% for an annual fleet fuel saving estimated at more than US $556,000
Objective
Improve fuel efficiency while reducing overall engine emissions
- CAT 3516 B HD EUI engine
- Taconite mine
- Minnesota
Situation
A taconite mine utilizes 48 CAT production haul trucks that can burn in excess of 100 gallons per hour at full load. The customer worked in partnership with ExxonMobil to study how a synthetic SAE 5W-40 engine oil could improve fuel efficiency compared to a conventional SAE 15W-40 engine oil. A fuel economy study was then conducted on a CAT 3516 B HD EUI engine using an engine dynamometer and high accuracy fuel meters.
Recommendation
The use of Mobil Delvac 1™ ESP 5W-40 heavy-duty diesel engine oil was recommended by ExxonMobil engineers for the mobile equipment fleet to improve fuel efficiency while simultaneously reducing overall engine emissions, as demonstrated in a CAT 3516 engine.
Results
The ExxonMobil recommendation was adopted by the customer to help improve the fuel efficiency of their 48 mining haul trucks by an estimated average of 1.9%, representing an annual fuel savings of more than US $556,000.
In addition, the related emissions reduction was estimated using Tier IV EPA standards at more than 1,800 metric tons per year.
