5W-40 motor oil
The 5W-40 viscosity is a prevalent recommendation for performance engines in European vehicles with gas-powered engines, and in American diesel pickup trucks.
We offer 5W-40 oils for gasoline- and diesel-powered engines.
If you have a modern European vehicle, consider Mobil 1™ Formula M or Mobil Super™ Synthetic Euro. Compare these two oils below. They can be used in either gasoline- or diesel-powered engines.
If your diesel-powered engine requires an oil meeting CK-4 specifications, then choose between Mobil 1™ Turbo Diesel Truck or Mobil Delvac 1™ ESP. Note: We don’t compare diesel engine oils with motor oils formulated for gasoline-powered vehicles.
What do the numbers in 5W-40 mean? The numbers refer to the weight and thickness, or viscosity, of the oil. Motor oil gets thicker when it’s cold and thinner when it heats up. The first number indicates the viscosity of the oil at a cold temperature, and the second number indicates the viscosity at operating temperatures.
