Situation
A coal mine operates gear couplings that required frequent regreasing. The couplings were lubricated with a conventional NLGI 0 grade grease with an ISO 220 VG base oil. The grease was bleeding out of the couplings and contaminating the roller stands and rolled material. As a result, the company had to regrease its couplings every 14 days. In an effort to improve reliability, the company approached ExxonMobil to identify a grease solution capable of extending regreasing intervals and minimizing grease consumption.
