Mobil SHC™ 630 synthetic gear oil helps enhance mining truck fuel economy*
Company-estimated annual savings of
US $2.15M
Situation
A Minnesota-based mine operates approximately 50 CAT 793 C, D and F haul trucks equipped with differentials and final drives. As the trucks have evolved from the C series to the F series, the horsepower and loads on the drivetrains have steadily increased, often leading to premature component wear and elevated drivetrain operating temperatures as high as 190°F (88°C). Looking to enhance equipment performance, the company approached ExxonMobil engineers for a lubricant solution capable of improving cold weather performance, lowering operating temperatures and increasing component life.
Recommendation
ExxonMobil engineers recommended conducting a fuel economy test using Mobil SHC™ 630 synthetic lubricant as the drivetrain oil in the differential and final drive compartment. Formulated to provide excellent thermal and oxidation resistance at both high and low operating temperature extremes, Mobil SHC 630 synthetic gear oil has a low traction coefficient to help reduce friction and increase efficiency in sliding components like gears.
Result
The company reports that Mobil SHC 630 synthetic lubricant has helped lower drivetrain operating temperatures by almost 10°F and improve fuel economy by 5.5 percent. Mobil SHC 630 gear oil has also helped minimize maintenance downtime, reducing human-machine interaction by 326 hours and reducing over 8,000 gallons of waste oil generation each year, resulting in an annual savings of US $2.15 million.
