Mobil SHC™ 629 synthetic gear oil helps enhance mixer efficiency

Reduced oil-related expenditures by an estimated

50%
Mobil SHC 629

Situation

A pharmaceutical company’s fermentation facility operates 18 mixers, each driven by 500 HP motors and Western DV 6OH model gearboxes. These gearboxes operate outdoors in temperatures as low as 0°F (-18°C) to as high as 100°F (38°C). In an effort to increase equipment reliability, the company approached ExxonMobil engineers to determine a strategy for extending the performance lifespan of both the equipment and in-service oil.

Recommendation

ExxonMobil engineers recommended the use of Mobil SHC™ 629 synthetic gear oil. Formulated from high viscosity base fluids and a proprietary additive system, Mobil SHC 629 gear oil is scientifically engineered to provide outstanding performance in extreme service applications at high and low temperatures, well beyond the capabilities of mineral oils. The company also established a bi-annual filter cart program to support its preventive maintenance routine.

Result

The company reports that the use of Mobil SHC 629 gear oil has helped maintenance personnel successfully extend oil drain intervals to beyond 20 years, reduce used oil generation by 6,700 gallons, and prolong oil and equipment life. This was achieved through reliable company maintenance practices that included the bi-annual use of a filter-cart to reduce water and particle contamination, and the annual addition of approximately 2 percent of the gearboxes’ oil reservoir capacity for makeup oil.
