We tested Mobil 1™ in Las Vegas taxis, where engines are pushed to the limit with high temperatures, lots of miles and around-the-clock hours of stop-and-start traffic – all in a hot, dusty environment. Watch as a Chevy Impala engine with 120,079 miles was disassembled with the cameras rolling at the Lucky Cab Company to document conditions using Mobil 1 synthetic oil.
High standards to help minimize engine wear
Motor oil contributes to an engine's performance in many ways. One is the ability to control wear. Automakers establish limits or standards that oils must meet in order to be approved for use. In the U.S., the current industry performance standard from the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) is known as ILSAC GF-5, and it consists of a series of tests that focus on key engine oil benefits, including:
