Diesel engines are becoming more severe - low emission engines generate more soot and operate at higher temperatures than older engines, and the latest engine designs also reduce oil consumption, resulting in less fresh oil makeup to replenish depleted additives. In addition, top piston rings are located higher, bringing the oil film closer to the combustion chamber and exposing the lubricant to severe thermal stresses. All these factors increase the need for a high performance lubricant.
